Frequently asked questions
How should an NGO choose an offline field-research app?
Test the whole field workflow on the devices your team will use: confirm offline capture is enabled, prepare and open a form while online, collect a test response in airplane mode, reconnect, and confirm that it syncs. Check which features still need internet, how pending submissions are shown, what happens when a worker changes devices, whether location capture is optional and reports its accuracy, and whether teams can export and review the data. FieldNotes supports offline collection from saved surveys plus voice notes and PRA records when offline capture is enabled; survey generation/publishing and voice transcription or translation wait for a connection. Do not choose a tool based only on an 'offline' label.

Can multiple team members use FieldNotes in the field?
Yes. Team members can work in role-based workspaces and collect against project data. When offline capture is enabled, records remain on the device until they sync; managers should confirm that submissions have reached the project before relying on the dashboard for a live count.

Is field data private and access-controlled?
FieldNotes uses role-based access and describes its data-protection controls on the Security & Privacy page. Location data is sensitive: collect it only when it serves the project purpose, explain the collection to participants, and follow your organisation's consent and retention rules.
